Nutritional science and the ‘power of nutrient dense’ foods is relatively ‘young’ in the Western world. There are countless research studies going on at any given time that will enhance this already burgeoning body of knowledge.
There are thousands of chemical reactions going on in our bodies every day. Nutrients are needed for this to happen. Each food we eat contains some or all of the following nutrients: carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals fiber and phytochemicals. Foods that have significant amount of a nutrient relative to the number of calories in that food are called nutrient dense. A food could be nutrient dense for either just one, or for many nutrients. This is crucial as it continues to become more apparent that we need to get the most nutrients from our food for the least number of calories.
